The Artist
MaryAnn
MaryAnn follows closely in the footsteps of her Father and brother as talents are
handed down in this family.
Her father was a master crafter of model Eastern Shore work boats. Boat owners
would bring him pictures of their vessels and he could turn scraps of wood into exact
replicas capturing the tiniest of details. His patterns were known only by him as he
kept them all in his head. His greatest accomplishment was having two of his boats
used as part of the props in the hit movie Runaway Bride with Richard Gere and
Julia Roberts. Look closely at the scene when Mr. Gere goes to the house of the
character "Maggie Carpenter" and you will see his boat sitting on the shelf in the
background. Another time up in her work room.
Mary's brother is yet another master of the craft trade and can take a piece of balsa
wood and create lifelike decoy's and shorebird carvings. His work can be seen
throughout the Delaware beach communities.
Sadly, in October of 2001 MaryAnn lost her father from complications of a stroke. It
was at his memorial service she realized the need to pursue her talents. The pastor
spoke of her father and the lives he touched with his work and said "when God
gives someone a talent it's truly a sin to waste it."
That Christmas, MaryAnn hand painted the pets of family members onto tote bags
and gave them as gifts. Little did she realize this was her start. Soon the phone
began to ring from people who had seen the bags and wanted to order one with
their pets. As the orders grew, her painting skills did too. Mary found new ways to
better her work and started creating and sewing her own tote bags and purses. She
still does not call herself an artist, however her work can be seen from California to
South Africa.
More About MaryAnn
When Mary's not painting, you'll find her working with the special needs animals in
her care. She also runs the Gretta's Wish pet food bank which provides free pet
food for the pets of the homeless, below income and homebound seniors. The pet
food bank feeds nearly 300 hungry animals throughout the community and Mary
spends countless hours delivering the food. A police escort is given so she can
reach the pets in high crime areas. Many times the pets are not the only ones she
helps and she'll take the last dime from her pocket and buy food for the owner as
well. Mary spends time with each person to make sure they are okay and lends a
shoulder for them to lean on. Food for the food bank is donated by caring
individuals throughout the area.
Looking down at someone for what they don't have is something Mary would never
do. She not only stands beside you, but behind you as well and is not afraid to
stand up for what she believes in when it comes to helping those less fortunate
whether human or animal.
Mary loves being outdoors and is an avid photographer. She'll do just about
anything to get a great shot from crawling in the mud to hanging in a tree. A hands
on person who's not afraid to get dirty and cleans up nice too.
Her favorite hobbies: jet skiing, fishing, boating, trail walking, painting, woodworking
and cooking.
Her music style and movie choices sometimes get her laughed at as she loves music
from the 50's - 60's -70's, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Yanni, George Gershwin,
Mickey Gilley, Eric Clapton and easy instrumentals.
An old movie junkie sums her up best. Mary says, "I love to curl up on the couch
with a bag of popcorn and watch an old movie". Love Affair with Annette Benning is
at the top of her list followed by the African Queen and The blue Orchid. Toss in an
old John Wayne now and then!
Mary is a huge fan of I love Lucy and has all of the DVD's and lots of memorabilia
